THE OPTION of paying for parking using a mobile phone may soon be rolled out across the borough.
Following a trial in Orpington, council officers now want to offer drivers across the whole borough the chance to use their mobiles to pay for any parking charges by ringing a service provider.
Councillors discussed the proposals at a meeting on Monday night (June 1).
Portfolio holder for the environment Councillor Colin Smith said: “This is clearly the future. Many people find the use of modern technology good and people want to use it.”
But Councillor Julian Grainger argued: “There is consumer resistance against mobile phone parking.”
A report claims the local authority might eventually be able to remove some cash-filled meters, helping to eliminate theft, fraud and vandalism.
Cllr Smith will decide whether to approve the plans later this year.
