A COUNCILLOR is campaigning for a busy road to be made safer, after a pedestrian was hit by a truck.

Lib Dem councillor David Edgerton is calling on Lewisham Council and the Mayor of London to place a pedestrian crossing at the junction of Court Hill Road and Lewisham High Street, Lewisham.

He says the high volume of traffic at the junction and the lack of lights to help pedestrians cross the road makes it particularly dangerous.

A woman was left seriously ill in hospital after being hit by a truck at the junction on April 28.

The next day Cllr Edgerton presented a petition with 380 signatures to Lewisham Council calling for action to make the road safer.

He said: “The recent accident confirmed my fears. The traffic comes from all directions and there’s just no break in traffic.

“Someone is definitely going to get killed and possibly a child could get hit next time.”

He says the junction is especially dangerous during the rush hours.

He added: “This has been raised with me by several local residents. They point out that many school pupils cross here in the mornings and elderly shoppers have to contend with cars coming from every direction.”

The councillor is now calling on Mayor Boris Johnson to address the issue and is collecting signatures for another petition which he will present at City Hall next month.
