BROMLEY & GREENWICH: Safety checks in south London reveal construction worries

THE Health and Safety Executive has warned construction site managers must make safety a priority, following a series of inspections in south London.

Government inspectors visited 40 sites in Bromley, Wandsworth, Lambeth, Greenwich, Croydon and Southwark, including one in Bromley.

The targeted inspections led to enforcement action being taken at 10 sites after working practices were found to breach safety rules.

The site in Bromley did not receive an enforcement notice.

Meanwhile, out of three site visits in Greenwich, two required enforcement notices.

Inspectors visited refurbishment, repair and maintenance projects as part of the Health and Safety Executive’s Shattered Lives campaign.

Principal inspector for construction in South London Andrew Beal said: "The Health and Safety Executive does not tolerate poor safety standards on construction sites.

"Where lives are being put at risk we will take the necessary action to protect workers, including closing sites and undertaking prosecutions.”
