HUNDREDS of residents are keeping fit at the same time as helping the environment by taking part in walk to work week.

This week’s drive to encourage people to walk more is being run by charity Living Streets as part of its Walking Works campaign.

During the week, employees, organisations and businesses are able to track how many calories were burned and how much carbon was saved using an online tool on the charity’s website.

Malcom Smith, executive director for regeneration at Lewisham Council, said: "There are many benefits of walking to work. It's healthy, it's good for the environment and it saves money.

"That's why the council's supporting Walk to Work Week and is actively encouraging Council staff to make walking a daily part of their lives."
