THOUSANDS of youngsters paraded in north Kent to celebrate St George’s Day on Thursday (April 23).

Around 700 schoolchildren from 15 Gravesham schools marched through Gravesend town centre, led by town crier Mark Taylor and accompanied by a towering model of St George.

While more than 500 members of Dartford Scouts Association met at Central Park, off Cranford Road, for a service before parading through the town centre.

Gurvinder Sandher, assistant director of North West Kent Racial Equality Council, which helped to organise the celebrations in Gravesham, says it was a “great success”.

He said: “Everything seemed to go to plan, from the weather to the schools to the positive reaction from the members of the public watching.

A Dartford Scouts Association spokesman said: “The parade was fun for the children and the people watching, with everyone getting into the spirit.”
