A GRANDMOTHER from Shorne is appealing for volunteers for a project at the school she runs in Zambia.

Wendy Ely established Hands of Compassion school for poor children in a shanty town in north Zambia in March 2001, and it now has around 500 pupils.

The 62-year-old says the registered charity is looking for 10 people to visit the school for a week in mid September, to paint classrooms and spend time with the children.

The grandmother of two, who oversees the running of the school from her home in Tanyard Hill, said: “This is an opportunity for people to experience the real Africa and provide the children they meet with a brighter future.

“We ask volunteers to pay the cost of the trip themself, approximately £1,800, and then raise sponsorship money to help Hands of Compassion continue providing education to the children.”
