FREE swimming is being offered to people aged over 60 as part of a government initiative aimed at getting people to lead healthier lives.

Cascades Leisure Centre in Thong Lane, Gravesend, and Cygnet Leisure Centre in Old Perry Street, Northfleet, will open their doors to the over 60s for free as part of Swim4life, a nationwide campaign designed to get more people active in the run up to London 2012.

The campaign which starts on April 1 is part of a £140 million programme which runs over two years. It is a central part of plans to ensure a lasting legacy from the London Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2012.

Lead member for communities Councillor David Turner said: “Gravesham Council is one of almost 300 local authorities across England to take part in the Government’s free swimming scheme.

“It is a wonderful initiative that will not only encourage Gravesham’s over 60s to be active, helping keep heart and lungs, joints and muscles healthy, but it will also be a great way for them to meet new people and socialise and that is important too.”
