THIRTY firefighters were called to the old Klingers factory site in Sidcup overnight after the security guard smelled smoke coming from the basement.
They took two hours to bring the fire of paper and electrical equipment under control in the storage facility of an old office building in Edgington Way.
Their job was made more difficult because of the holes in the floor and the open lift shafts in the derelict building but had the fire out by around 12.30am this morning (March 12), after being called just after 8pm yesterday.
They then used thermal imaging cameras to check for hot spots to make sure it would not reignite.
The security guard reported hearing noises as he was on patrol and the incident is being treated as arson and under investigation by police.
Edgington Way was closed from 8.12pm last night to 10.02pm.
