THE chief executive of Bromley's hospital trust has been chosen to head a powerful new health organisation in south-east London.

Dr Chris Streather was appointed as the interim chief executive at Bromley Hospitals’ NHS Trust in December but since then plans for the new South London Healthcare NHS Trust have moved forward.

And, subject to the approval of the Secretary of State for Health, the new trust - a merger of three hospital trusts in the boroughs of Bromley, Bexley and Greenwich - could come into existence next month.

Dr Streather, a renal physician and medical director at St George’s Hospital in Tooting, south west London, will lead the organsiation which could serve a population of more than a million people.

He said: "I am delighted to have been appointed chief executive of the new trust for south London and I am looking forward to what will be a great challenge.

“We have some tremendous staff at the three current trusts. The big challenge now is to unite these clinical teams into a single organisation dedicated to delivering the very best care for local people."

The merger of the Queen Elizabeth, Queen Mary's and Bromley hospital trusts will create a hospital trust with an income of more than £400m a year.
