Jack Bowers, 21, dies after crash in The Avenue

POLICE have confirmed that a 21-year-old driver involved in a police chase in Beckenham yesterday (February 12) has died.

Jack Bowers, from Eltham, crashed the car he was driving in The Avenue, Beckenham, at around 1.20am yesterday morning (February 12).

An unmarked police car was pursuing the vehicle at the time after it had failed to stop for officers.

Firefighters spent 40 minutes cutting Mr Bowers out of the car and he was taken to Lewisham Hospital with serious head injuries and in a critical condition.

But police have said that Mr Bowers died after doctors turned off his life support machine this afternoon (February 13).

Residents have described hearing a “god-almighty crash of screaming tyres, tearing metal and shattering glass” when Mr Bowers' car hit several parked vehicles.

Police had earlier tried to stop the car in nearby Copers Cope Road.

A police spokesman said: "The driver of the car pulled away at speed and officers followed the car.

"The officers lost sight of the car before locating it again about two minutes later, after it had collided with six stationary cars before coming to a stop."

The incident is being investigated by the Met police's collision investigation unit based at Catford.

It is being overseen by the Met police's directorate of professional standards.

Anyone with information should call Met police on 020 8785 8738 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

such a tragic end to a young life, There are a lot of ifs and buts "if only he'd stopped for the police etc" whatever the reasons why he didn't stop he has he has sadly had to pay the price with his life and leave his family and friends to pick up the pieces. People need to think more before getting behind the wheel.

It is a sad reflection on society that so many young people are coming to such tragic ends.

That said, what is being done to put a curb on youth crime once and for all?

Stories like this one seem to be appearing with uncomfortable regularity.

I would like to add that I had the pleasure of waking up this morning to find that the number plates on my car had been stolen overnight. The police told me that this is now a common crime as certain young members of the public like to switch plates in order to get away with paying for petrol.

Guess who has got to shell out £30 for new plates tomorrow. Yes, me.

ABCXYZ123, says...
6:01pm Fri 13 Feb 09

The 'art' of robbing number plates in order to steal petrol has been given a trendy name: 'Bilking'.

Just as the stealing of a car is known as 'joyriding', we now have another accepted term for a crime that takes the seriousness of the offence away and sweetens the bitter 'medicine' that the undesirables like to serve us against our will.

I don't want to cause offence, as if you are his mum you have probably been through enough in the last couple of days, but as this is a news story people will ask the question.

Frankly driving a car is easy, if you manage to smash into a car than your a poor driver...if you smash into several cars in a row than without a doubt....YOUR DOING IT WRONG!

Oh but yeah the police were chasing him, and if police chase you than obviously pulling over is completely out of the question right?

If you are training to be a police officer you are going to have to do a few things:

1. Drop your aggressive attitude and learn to respond to people without insulting them. After all I haven't insulted you.

2. Accept that people who break the law have broken the law. You will not be able to excuse them by saying their famill love them and are upset.

3. Drop the text talk you'll need to be able to write up full reports of incidents.

I can't imagine how you are going to arrest anyone. Are you going to pat them on the back and say never mind you just made a mistake on your way love.

Oh and by the way you don't know me so how can you make the judgement that I am a 'cow' when you don't actually know my gender.

True Katieee, but my daughter lives with her boyfriend and they have a mortgage to contend with and my son works hard, has a great girlfriend and they too are saving for a house, so as law abiding goes, i think they know right from wrong, its the other people that you have to worry about, the knife & gun carriers ect, thats my concern.

Sad as this loss of life is, the fact that he drove from Copers Cope Road in to the Avenue, crossing the main road (Southend Lane) at over 80mph,shows that he had little regard for his own life nor for the life of anyone else. The death toll could have been much higher if he had hit another car going across Southend Lane at that speed.

I saw the recovery team taking the wrecked cars away the next morning -they said that he had lost control of the car after hitting black ice and crashed less than 100 yards past the junction - for the record, the Avenue was still covered in black ice at 7am.

A stupid way to lose a life.

There are clearly issues. This is neither the time nor the place to debate them. Emotions are running high. Family members and friends, understandably, feel the need to defend the person they have lost. Perhaps News Shopper can run a story on tackling crime seperately. That way it will avoid becoming so personalised and facilitate a more balanced debate.

An unmarked police car would only be allowed to participate in a pursuit if it's driver was properly trained to do so and if the car had flashing blue light and probably had sirens, so the really does rule out the theory of this young man thinking he was being chased by anyone else. Therefore, why was he running? That is however almost irrelevant now. He had a choice. He could have pulled over when requested to do so and dealt with the officers, but HE chose to run. Should the police just let him go then? Supposing they just let people go? Child molesters, murderers, terrorists.... where does it stop? He was obviously running for some reason, and it may sadly turn out to be some petty thing, but whatever it was, he put peoples lives at risk. He risked the officers lives and those of the innocent public. I do not personally care about his, he did not care about mine did he? If I had been walking down the middle of that street he would have just mown me down, so why should I care about him? I care about his family, but if the comments on here are upsetting for them, then perhaps they should switch off their computers, this is not a condolence board. Sorry to sound so heartless, which I am not, I think it is great he carried a donor card, many people need organs after they have been hit by high-speed vehicles!! I too carry a donor card, does that mean I can behave in a disgusting and reckless way and it not matter. If you drive a vehicle in a reckless manner at ridiculous speeds you will crash and possibly lose your life, he would have known that, yet he still did it. His friends and family have no right to try to make the public or police or society in general feel guilty for what has happened to him. That is ridiculous and they know it. As for the girl who has lost lots of friends in stolen, racing vehicles, change your friends! I would be really worried if I was your parent! If you are joining the police, you might struggle, as when you go through the selection process they look very carefully at your friends and family! Instead of being on here bigging them up, perhaps you should be taking a long hard look at your approach to things and maybe policing is not best for you, as trying to justify their actions all the time is clearly not winning any battles. People are dying love!!

LNN, Chislehurst, Sorry you don't agree with my comments. I would question the 'pointless comments' post. This lad was in a position to stop and comply with the law, his decision not to do this. Because of HIS actions he has sadly died. I wouldn't wish this even on my worst enemy, but I do beleive that people who paint this lad out to be a total angel are painting a false image of him. We are all responsible for our actions. I wish people would admit that he was wrong not to stop, and sadly he has paid for that decision with his life, and his friends and families grief.

I knew jack quite well and i am saddened by some of the things that people have wrote on here. The thing is jack was a s*** bag and he never done the write thing when it came to the law BUT... if you knew him personally then you would have known that even though he always done the wrong thing he was a loving, kind and caring person. He wasnt some big time wanna be gangster he was just Jack B, practical joker. I am not trying to paint a pretty picture of him, thats clear as i have said that he was a s*** bag. I just think people should have a little bit more consideration & think about what they are writing and all the ifs & buts, there is no point. What happened to Jack is sad but is mostly his own fault, god knows why he didnt stop or why he was driving the stupid car in the first place. Instead of going on and on about these things, the people that did know him should just remember him for all the good times they shared together. RIP Jack B, your going to be missed so much xxx

my last parting comment, what goes around comes around, remember that when you next decide pass judgement.

Question to "there mum, lewisham" - are you the mother of this young man? If so, why are you to referring yourself as "there mum". If you are his mum surely you would be "his mum". I don't want to cause offence, as if you are his mum you have probably been through enough in the last couple of days, but as this is a news story people will ask the question.
was he a traveller?

I live in the States now but have just heard the sad and tragic news of Jack's passing from my two boys Joe and James. Joe is the same age as Jack and they played together for several years in a sunday league youth football team in Mottingham. Jack was a fun loving and wonderful young man .I'm so, so very sorry. My heart goes out to Jack's mum and sister... You are in my thoughts and prayers. God bless you Jack, Shona Joe and James xxx
