AN underground cable is thought to have caused an explosion in Orpington this afternoon (February 3).
Police and fire crews were called to the Abbey bank in Orpington High Street at around 3pm after reports of the blast.
Police suspect that an electric cable buried underground may have exploded causing the pavement to crack.
The path around the bank has been cordoned off but pedestrians can continue to use the pavement on the opposite side of the road.
The road is currently closed to traffic and drivers are being diverted up Homefield Rise.
No-one is believed to been hurt in the incident and while Abbey has now closed, other shops are trading as usual.
It not yet known whether the explosion came about as a result of the adverse weather conditions.
