Geoff Billingsley fondly remembers Jake and Elwood at The Blues Brothers Party tribute show
Everybody, needs somebody, as the memorable song states, and proving such records are still much loved The Blues Brothers Party took The Churchill by storm. John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd made the film legendary of course, but dig out the DVD if you want them.
For this live stage production, Simon Connolly plays Jake and Ben Watson is brother Elwood.
Their portrayals were reminiscent of original pair, of course, but Connolly wasn't nearly fat enough to mirror Belushi. He made up for this with his brilliant voice. The Brothers were backed on their 'mission from God' by the Sensational Sisters of Soul whose performances were just stunning.
They were terrific support and joined the audience for a couple of numbers with the Brothers. The band too deserve praise - they were just wonderful.
The Peter Gunn Theme, Midnight Hour, Try a Little Tenderness, all these songs you know and love featured. I was surprised to see so many mature people on this opening night – but they were out in force and seemed to especially enjoy the Rawhide theme.
The Blues Brothers Party was a splendid tribute to a unique partnership, sadly ended with John Belushi’s death in March 1982. With wonderful shows such as this one though, it will be some considerable time before they are forgotten.
