1920 - The League of Nations was established to prevent another catastrophic war like the First World War.
1957 - Harold Macmillan became Prime Minister following the resignation of Sir Anthony Eden.
1985 - A gas blast rocked Putney in south-west London, killing eight people. The explosion in the prestigious Newnham House flats injured dozens more and caused £250million-worth of damage.
1996 - King Hussein of Jordan made his first public visit to Israel's largest city, Tel Aviv.
2008 - The first man credited to reach the summit of Mount Everest, Sir Edmund Hillary, died at the age of 88.
