VIDEO - ABBEY WOOD: Safety protest by mums sparks fight outside school

A BLOCKADE by mums in protest at speeding drivers outside a school in Abbey Wood continued today.

Mothers of pupils at De Lucy Primary School, in Cookhill Road, have been forming a human chain across the road leading to the school’s entrance.

They decided to take action after a child was nearly run over before Christmas.

Mum Samantha Barker, of Sewell Road, Abbey Wood, says headteacher Linda Cohen has agreed to call a meeting next week to discuss the issues raised by the protestors.

The 39-year-old said: “At the meeting she’s going to advise drivers not to use the road.

“The protest is not going to be just a drop in the ocean. We are going to go all the way.”

Yesterday, a fight broke out, believed to be between a driver and a resident who was complaining about cars parking on the pavements.

Protestor Wendy Baillie, of Manor Road, Erith, says confrontations of this kind are common.

The 33-year-old said: “Every afternoon there’s some sort of confrontation with somebody because the parents are parking where they shouldn’t be parking.

“They don’t like it because they can’t pull down this road and pick their kids up.

“It’s a two minute walk to the gate so why should our kids be put at risk for it.”

It is not thought anyone was arrested but News Shopper has contacted Greenwich police for information.

Our own Newshopper soap! Bit of a Scary Mary situation going on there.

Though I do agree with what they are doing. When mine were little I was astonished at the sheer selfishness of some mums who daily put other peoples childrens lives at risk. I could sit here all night giving examples of some of the things I've seen.

However...did anyone notice that little one that flew across the road behind the "human chain". It cuts both ways. That child could have veered off into the next road and been killed. Who was supposed to be looking after it I wonder?

Dear Newsshopper,

You were there and you know that incident had nothing to do with us, that was a totally different road and im disgusted that you have associated us with this! Our blockade is simply for the school road, the video you have posted on this site has totally been edited for your benefit, think again , the resident involved has this problem every day of the week, even before we were doing this, she is a lovely lady that is disabled and she has a dropped kerb but no one thinks of this when they want to park up why cannot people be considerate of other peoples welfare!!!

I would like to personally thank all of you people out there for your support. It just goes to show that there are as many good as there are bad. Thankyou very much and we will keep it up until something is done. If that means staying across that road for the next 12 months, then so be it but, we are there to stay, whatever the weather. I am sorry that the news shopper chose to show the fight which was nothing to do with us, we were actually just getting ready to leave. We have had a lot of exposure on our cause, with the local papers and radio and this has helped us a lot, the council have apparently given BBC London a comment that they would like to meet the parents to discuss what can be done so we look forward to this meeting, also, Mrs Cohen (Headmistress) has asked for a meeting this week, so all is looking well for now but thank you once again for all your support and please keep it up until the problem is solved.

You are all moaning about the parking outside of the school which is great, but on the video there is one lady with a cigarette hanging out of her mouth.....isn't this just as harmful to the children?

909... yes there is a lady with a cigarette in her mouth, and i dont blame her at all having a cigarette, as she had just been kicked in the leg and punched in the head by the woman running in and out of the road, all because she asked her nicely could she mover her car up from blocking her driver!!! she is the disabled woman that crystal 32 was talking about in her comment, another thing she does not have children and it was not outside the school it was on the road that runs along the bottom of the road we are blocking, another thing she was smoking in a open space out side her house and isn't breaking the law doing that is it!!!! and as for isn't that just as harmful to the children? dont even come close someone smoking in a open space outside and a kid being killed by some people driving to fast near a school that could end up hurting a child or killing one!!! and the point to us doing this is to stop parents driving n speeding down the cul-de-sac out side the school gates, not parents parking on the other road, if they want to park across drives and park on the pavement then they are breaking the law doing so. by them doing that you will now see why we are doing what we are doing, because these people just dont care what they do when they do it, and how.
