1999 – Eleven-year-old Jessie Gibert from Croydon became the World Women’s Amateur Chess Champion.

2001 – The Pentagon released a list ranking the top 283 threats to national security. On the list were militia groups, religious extremists, ecoterrorists, cybercriminals, Hollywood producers, angry drivers, rap-metal bands and Belgians.
