PENSIONERS in Bromley are being given bells for their purses this Christmas in an effort to deter pick-pockets.
The bells, which have been handed out to elderly residents by Bromley Police's Safer Transport Team, ring when a purse is moved.
More than 350 bells have been paid for by a donation of £100 from The Halifax Building Society in Bromley High Street and handed out in the borough's town centres and on buses.
Head of Bromley Police's Safer Transport Teams, Sergeant John Fleming, said: "This is a very simple but effective idea, which will help deter thieves who target predominately purse theft from handbags.
“Thieves look for congested locations such as busy banks and buses to get up close to victims.”
He added: ”These bells can act as a deterrent but are no substitute for basic crime prevention awareness.
“Always zip-up coats and bags and report suspicious behaviour to staff or the police.”
