HAYES: Ten-year toy car race overtakes £50k target

MONEY raised by an electric toy car race held every year for the last decade has beaten the target of £50,000.

Gill and Chris Wood, of Pickhurst Lane, Hayes, ran the event at their home for the last time in August in memory of their son, Matthew, who died from a brain tumour in 1999 aged 23.

The amount raised from this summer’s event has just been finalised as a record £8,400, meaning over the last ten years £52,000 has been raised.

Proceeds will go to Sydenham-based St Christopher’s Hospice and national charity Brain Tumour UK.

Every year teams competed against each other in the car race with the last event attracting 140 people, including some of veterinary nurse Matthew’s old school friends and work colleagues.

Gill, a former travel company worker, says achieving the ten-year £50,000 target is absolutely fantastic.

The 63-year-old said: “It’s a wonderful tribute to Matthew, he would be overwhelmed.

“It’s a nice end to our event and a great Christmas present.”
