1733 - Mr Cracker of Dorset watched a burnished silver disc dart through the air. It was one of the first recorded UFO sightings.
1952 - Pregnancy was acknowledged for the first time on American television in I Love Lucy.
1991 - The leaders of Russia, Belarus and the Ukraine signed an agreement forming the Commonwealth of Independent States to replace the USSR.
1995 - Headteacher Philip Lawrence was stabbed to death outside his school in Maida Vale, North London. He had gone to the aid of one of his pupils who was being attacked by a gang.
1999 - It was reported that Rowan Atkinson was building a miniature Millennium Dome in his back garden. It was 40ft high and was the centerpiece of a £1m party at his Oxfordshire mansion.
2000 - Scented underwear went on sale.
