A 12-YEAR-OLD boy was knocked down and injured just hours after witnessing another accident at the same spot.

Antony Glover and his older brother Bryan, 15, were crossing the busy Danson Road, Bexleyheath, on their way home from Danson Park.

The boys were crossing to Bean Road from a pedestrian refuge in the middle of the road at about 6pm on June 23 when Antony stepped out and was hit by a car.

Antony, a pupil at Sherwood Park Primary School, in Blackfen, was thrown about 20ft and landed unconscious in the road.

A number of other drivers, including a nurse, stopped to help the injured boy and several people came out of their homes with blankets.

Antony’s brother Bryan ran to his grandmother’s home in Bean Road, where the family has been staying, to alert them.

His grandmother, Christine Hackett, 62, said “Bryan was in total shock.

“He didn’t want to leave his brother and he tried to call us on his mobile phone, but he was in such a state, he couldn’t get the number right.” She said Bryan told her an hour earlier, on their way to the park, they had seen another accident at the same place, involving a boy aged about 12 riding a bike. Luckily he escaped without injuries.

Antony and Bryan were taken to Queen Mary’s Hospital, Sidcup, and detained.

Bryan was treated for severe shock while Antony suffered head injuries and serious bruising. Both boys are now recovering at home.

Mrs Hackett said she could not understand why there were no crossings in Danson Road, saying: “It is a busy road and it has a big park on one side. Sometimes it is like a racetrack.” The good news is two crossings are planned for the road.

Work is about to start on the first combined cycle and pedestrian lights-controlled crossing near the junction of Sandhurst Road and a second lights-controlled crossing near the junction of Bean Road, will be installed next year.

A Bexley Council spokesman said the road had only an average accident rate.
