A MENTALLY ill man died after an incident with another psychiatric hospital patient.

Croydon Coroner’s Court heard Arttan Hussain had been detained at the Royal Bethlem Hospital, Monks Orchard Road, Beckenham, for three years under the Mental Health Act.

Hussain, aged 32, of Southend, Essex, collapsed in the hospital grounds after becoming distressed on June 21.

Detective Inspector Mike Parker relayed what Bethlem staff had told him.

Det Insp Parker said: “He was agitated and was allowed into the community gardens where he began throwing plant pots at a fellow patient.

“It was decided to isolate him for a cooling-off period but he started having difficulty breathing, so a doctor was called.

“He was injected with drugs and electric shocks were tried to revive his heart.” A post-mortem had been carried out but no cause of death reported.

Coroner Dr Roy Palmer opened and adjourned the inquest on June 27.
