A COUPLE escaped injury when a smoke alarm alerted them to a fire in the early hours of the morning.

Firefighters battled the blaze in a flat on the third-floor of Queen Adelaide Court, in Penge.

The pair, who were asleep at the time, were woken by the alarm as the fire took hold.

More than 20 firefighters battled the blaze, the cause of which is still being investigated.

Almost a third of the flat was damaged by flames in the incident, which happened on June 23 at about 2.20am.

No-one else was involved and there were no injuries.
