A BATTLE to save chemists in the borough has been stepped up after an MP handed a huge petition to parliament.
Orpington MP John Horam presented the document on behalf of its 6,000 signatories in response to recent recommendations made by the Office of Fair Trading.
Its report proposed supermarkets should be able to sell prescription drugs but Mr Horam told News Shopper it could be disastrous for local pharmacies.
He said: “Chemists are so important for the elderly and sick and they build up a relationship and sense of security these people need.
“These proposals mean some of these small businesses would close which would be another blow for the local economy to which they are vital.” The petition was signed by people across the borough who rely on local chemists including Farrant’s Pharmacy, Station Square, Petts Wood.
Farrant’s manager Caroline Cleary said: “This would spell the end for us and rip the heart out of the local community.”
