CHILDREN who do not like water have been left “dehydrated” following a school’s ban on fruit juices according to parents.

Headteacher Alison Newbold has introduced a water-only policy at De Lucy School, in Cookhill Road, Abbey Wood, as part of a healthy eating campaign which has already seen a ban on biscuits.

But more than 100 parents have signed a petition against the policy and are demanding fruit drinks be allowed again as their children do not like water and are being left dehydrated in the hot weather.

One parent, who asked to remain anonymous, says her children appear tired when she brings them home from school.

She added: “Children can only bring water in clear bottles so teachers can see what is in them.

“A lot of the children aren’t drinking the water. Parents have complained many children appear dehydrated when they collect them.

“The school is being really stupid. It should concentrate on education and not on what pupils drink during the day.” Greenwich Council says the school’s governors have backed the water-only policy.

A spokesman said: “Water is perfect for rehydration and is provided in every classroom. Children are also encouraged to bring in their own water and it is also brought out to them while they are on the playground, during particularly hot weather.

“While fruit juices are popular among young children, they are bad for teeth and can potentially make children hyperactive.

“Although it is not council policy to have a water-only rule in place, as part of our healthy eating campaign the scheme has its value in ensuring a balanced, nutritional diet.” But Blackheath nutritionist Hilary Kingston, who runs Think Nutrition, disagreed about fruit juices particularly when they are natural.

She said: “If it’s unsweetened, organic and without additives, then it’s okay for the young. Natural juices have natural sugars which are not too bad because children can burn them off.” Do you think schools should control what children eat and drink on the premises?
