A CLEAN-UP day organised by News Shopper was deemed a great success by those who attended.

We organised the litter pick after a political row broke out over Bromley’s famed “clean and green” image.

Opposition councillors leapt to the defence of Labour London Assembly members, who claimed the Tory leadership was neglecting the borough.

On Saturday, News Shopper staff were joined by Conservative and Liberal Democrat councillors from Bromley Council for a clean-up of Keston Common.

Lib Dem MEP for London Baroness, Sarah Ludford, and Tory London Assembly member for Bromley, Bob Neill, also turned up to lend a hand.

Armed with gloves and litter-grabbers, the team of more than 20 volunteers collected everything from discarded crisp packets to an old sewing machine.

There were some extremely unpleasant finds among the dozen or so black plastic sacks we filled, including used contraceptives.

Bromley Park Ranger Toby Smith, who arranged the clean-up for us, said it was a “very successful morning”.

“Thanks to everybody who helped out, it was good to see people there”, he added.

The council’s executive member for environment Councillor George Taylor praised News Shopper for organising the event.

He added: “We need to inflict the maximum penalties on people who drop litter.” A Lib Dem spokesman said: "Much of the litter we picked up was a major health hazard, such as used contraceptives and soiled toilet paper." News Shopper group editor Andrew Parkes said: “We hope this hugely-successful day will be the start of similar campaigns.

“We could be coming to a neighbourhood near you soon.” Mr Smith has urged residents who want to organise their own clear-up to call him on 020 8658 1593. All equipment and materials will be supplied.
