THE borough’s schools are set to receive more than £190,000 in grants for improvements to their buildings.

The money will come as part of a £1.5m cash boost from the Department for Education and Skills after Kent County Council (KCC) successfully bid for extra funding.

Ten schools in the borough will receive the money which will be used to replace temporary classrooms and to create early years outdoor play areas and special needs facilities.

Cobham Primary School, The Street, Cobham, is being given £76,000 to pay for a desperately-needed extension.

Over the past three years, the school and parents have raised a further £108,000 and the KCC funding will now allow two mobile classrooms to be replaced with a purpose-built three-classroom extension.

Headteacher Gerald Sperling said: “We’re delighted we have got the final funding and hopefully work will start this week after 10 years in those temporary classrooms.

“It will benefit the children who will have larger better model classrooms and can now do things which were previously restricted.” It is hoped the building work will be completed in time for the start of the next school year.

Gravesend Grammar School, Painter’s Ash, Singlewell and St George’s, Wrotham, primary schools are among others which will also receive additional funds for improvements.
