BECKENHAM CATOR TOWNSWOMEN’S GUILD We had a very interesting evening when Pat Manning talked and showed slides of The Cator Family of Beckenham and Woodbastwick. John Cator came from Hereford in the 1730s to Bankside, Southwark and made his fortune with his timber importers.

His son John became Lord of the Manor of Beckenham in 1773 and rebuilt Beckenham Place. The present day Cators live in the parish of Woodbastwick in Norfolk that was bought in 1870 by John Barwell Cator.

Several members of the Guild live on what was the Cator Estate in Beckenham and many of the local roads are named after members of the Cator family.

The next meeting of the guild is in the Memorial Hall of Penge Congregational Church on Wednesday, July 16 when Pat Woodstock will talk about Faberge Eggs.
