HOUSEHOLDS in Bromley generate more carbon emissions per person than in any other borough across the capital.

According to the latest figures released by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, the borough of Bromley was responsible for 806,000 tonnes of household CO2 emissions in 2006 with the average resident releasing 2.69 tonnes of the gas per year.

The London Assembly member for the Green Party, Darren Johnson, is calling on the Mayor of London Boris Johnson to tackle the borough’s domestic carbon footprint.

He said: “Bromley’s emissions are extremely disappointing.

“Climate change in the borough must be managed quickly and effectively if the Mayor’s target of cutting London’s CO2 emissions by 60 per cent by 2025 is to be met.

“London’s homes are responsible for more than a third of the capital’s total emissions, so tackling domestic emissions is vital.”

So what is the council doing about this? Aside from the problems predicted if the climate continues to change, high CO2 means high energy/fuel use, which means bad things like fuel poverty (spending too much on gas and electricity because of inefficient homes) and congestion problems? What help and incentives are we offered?

"So what is the council doing about this?"

Whay does the Council have to do something? People are quite capable of changing some light-bulbs, turning the heating down or using the bus/train if it's practical. Why does the state have to "do something"?

You'll save money by saving on fuel/energy bills ("climate change" need not enter into it). What more incentive do you need? C'mon people - think for yourselves and stop expecting the government to wipe your backside for you!

I agree in part with both comments above: We can all do the small things to help ourselves, fair enough. But how come I've seen other councils offer grants and interest free loans (and even council tax rebates) to incentivise installing solar panels and the like?
If we want to keep Bromley a lovely place to live in then we should all do more to combat climate change - and the council could and should lead on this.
