SPARKS are flying after a council announced proposals to axe a popular fireworks show.

The free Blackheath Fireworks Display, funded by Lewisham and Greenwich Councils, is under threat as part of Lewisham Council's plans to make savings of around £10m.

The event attracts around 80,000 people every November making it one of the biggest free displays in London. But this year's show could be the last if the council decides to save £36,000 by stopping its share of the funding.

Lib Dem councillor for Blackheath, Chris Maines, says residents are not only proud of the show, but that stopping it could lead to more Bonfire Night injuries.

He said: "If the official display were to be stopped I can see an increase in people providing their own entertainment on the heath, letting off their own fireworks with an increase in injuries and damage.

"We must ensure there is a public display because public displays are the safest way to enjoy fireworks.

He added: "Many people walk from all over Lewisham to the heath, which is able to deal safely with large numbers of families, it is a tradition that we must protect."

But the council's contract with event organiser, Festival Fireworks UK, comes to an end in 2009/10 and officers are concerned the price will increase in future years - squeezing the council's budget.

Mayor of Lewisham, Sir Steve Bullock, said: "Council officers have simply put forward proposals for making savings to balance the council's budget next year.

"These proposals will then be considered by councillors. I have not expressed a view on any of these proposals and nor would I at such an early stage."

He added: "If Cllr Maines has views, he should raise them in the committees he serves on when they discuss these officer proposals."

Meanwhile, Frank Smith, the chairman of the Blackheath Society which works to improve the lives of village residents, said: "We would all be so disappointed if the display were to stop.

"It's a greatly appreciated event and would be sorely missed. It doesn't cause any long-term damage to the heath and so it would be a great shame if it stopped.

"People come from all over the place to watch the show and it's great for the community."

The savings proposals will next be discussed by Lewisham Council's Public Accounts Select Committee on November 4.

This year's display takes place on November 8, starting at 8pm.

- We asked Greenwich Council, which contributes £30,000 to the event, for its views on the matter. The council stated that it could not comment as it would be inappropriate to speculate on the outcome of a decision due to be taken by Lewisham Council.

What a depressing country this is to live in.

I hope they make the right decision. Councils should continue to provide firework displays to celebrate history and for safety. I have been to the Blackheath display many times and although it is an incredible amount of money literally going up in smoke it is worth it. I'm sure the council could look elsewhere if it wants to save money rather than depriving us of a well established traditional annual event.

As we are in a time where money is short for most councils, they should stop it. Lets put the money towards something worth doing.

REMEMBER THE 5TH OF NOVEMBER IF YOU ARE ONE OF THE LUCKY PEOPLE

apak24 would probably prefer that money saved from the Blackheath fireworks display be spent on more politically correct and worthy projects such as those who deem that our traditions and heritage are inconsequential.

apak24, if you do not like our traditional way of life, let Your Lord suggest this:

Bore off to Afghanistan, Zimbabwe or Iraq and ply your views there if you do not like it here.

Alternatively, keep your trap shut, open your eyes and let people celebrate their traditions in the same way they have been doing long before you came along with your pathetic, suffocating, selfish and puerile views.

While I would not voice my opinion as strongly as Erastus I do agree. We are very keen to throw money at any idea that celebrates diverse culture etc yet when it comes to celebrating the history of the U.K funds are suddendly a little tight.

Lets keep the firework display and educate our children of why we commerorate the 5th of Nov.

I was always under the impression that Greenwich and local business funded the display, let hope the money can be found to keep it going.

fireworks are waste of money if there are better things to spend it on then why not? at least, consider whether you need £30k worth - many schools, etc. have displays for fund-raising purposes so it doesn't have to be a freebie

I'm a Blackheath resident and have enjoyed the fireworks for many years - it's a fantastic display. It would be a shame to lose it, but then again the money is a factor, especially at the moment. The idea of charging for entry won't work on the heath, but contributions could be sought as they are for the Christmas lights. Perhaps a bit of hard financial negotiation with fireworks suppliers is required as well.

Mr Erastus whenever someone makes a point or expresses there opinion you have to insult them, i have reported this to the newshopper and i hope they will do something about it. We all sign up to make our opinions along with everyone else and as far as i know this country still has a freedom of speach policy so i wont shut up, and just for the record i will not be leiving my country just for you or anyone else.

apak24, it's Lord Piggott to you.

Please feel free to report Your Lord as much as you like.

While you are at it, why don't you report yourself for being one of those responsible for trying to slowly eradicate every tradition this country holds dear?

I bet you love it that Nativity plays now star Postman Pat and Bob The Builder, don't you.

Perhaps you should do yourself a favour and read Your Lord's blog in the Your Say section? In it I discuss how our culture is systematically being taken away from us.

You, sir, are a traitor. It is a shame that traitors are no longer hung, drawn and quartered as in Mr Fawkes' day.

Your Lord has duly signed the petition to save the fireworks display.

Let us hope that many more do the same, though do not expect that the traitor known as apak24 will see sense and do the same.
