A PENSIONER who admitted killing his ill wife while she was being treated in Lewisham Hospital has been spared jail.
Retired civil servant Sidney Norton smothered 84-year-old Betty Norton with a pillow as she lay in bed, the Old Bailey heard.
She had been taken to hospital with stomach pains but also suffered from dementia and the effects of a stroke.
Mrs Norton was found dead on November 2 last year, four days after she was admitted to hospital.
Norton, her sole carer, feared he would soon be unable to look after his wife.
The 86-year-old was charged with murder but pleaded guilty to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility.
Today (October 10) he was given a nine-month jail sentence suspended for one year.
The couple have one son, Alan, and lived at the same house in St Donatts Road, New Cross, for most of their married life.

For once a judge made the RIGHT decision.
May he live out the rest of his days in peace with the knowledge that his wife is not suffering.
