DESIGNS for a £2m hilltop landmark have been whittled down to a shortlist of three.

The Ebbsfleet Landmark will be up to 50 metres high and within the Ebbsfleet Valley development near Swanscombe.

Funding comes from Land Securities, Eurostar and London & Continental Railways, who appointed a committee, the Ebbsfleet Landmark Project, to oversee its creation.

On October 1 the committee decided to assess construction plans for three designs before it chooses one as a winner early next year.

Committee chairman Stephen Jordan said: "With such an outstanding range of proposals, it's right that we now look carefully at the practical delivery of each one."

The chosen are by professional artists Daniel Buren, Richard Deacon and Mark Wallinger.

The landmark is expected to be completed by 2010.

How about a huge edifice of Howard Dawber, AKA The Red Tie to welcome visitors to Kent?

After all, Mr Dawber MP, is our saviour.

I think if any of these designs are to be chosen then Richard Deacon's steel monster would blend in better within this pylon populated backdrop giving some relief to the pointy pylon tops.

How about they NOT put a `landmark` up and instead use the money towards the poeple who actually need it.

£2M on a crap statue nobody wants. How about using it to keep Queen Marys open as an A&E and a maternity unit. Or build a prison and put the scum in it for a large number of years.

another waste of money. when will these people learn that this is nothing more than an insult to decent folk trying hard to work and earn a living and make ends meet ? the money could be better used opening a specialist unit or funding some special care baby unit, im sure the hospital involved would be happy to name a ward after the donaters !

I wish I had known about this earlier I would have made a suggestion or two of my own.
How about a gigantic welcome mat with direction to the benefits office printed on it.
Or an enormous caravan where people can dump their rubbish for free?

What's the matter with you bunch of whingers? The money should be used for this, the money should be used for that. Despite it being clearly stated, it's obviously escaped your attention that this project is being privately funded by three businesses so I would say it's entirely up to them what they spend their money on.

Am I missing something? Where are the pictures of the designs? The only images I'm getting are a bunch of squirrels advertising a bank.

The designs were all on display at Bluewater for several months. I saw them in May and voted then.
