THE theme tune to TV soap EastEnders is more recognisable to people than the National Anthem. Have your say.

A survey has found the EastEnders theme was the most recognised out of four popular tunes, including the National Anthem.

More than a third of respondents chose the theme to the 23-year-old BBC1 show as the tune they instantly recognised.

The National Anthem was next, followed by the Match of the Day and Coronation Street theme tunes.

The survey was commissioned by the Performing Right Society (PRS) in conjunction with Saros Research.

Commenting on the results, Ellis Rich, chairman of the PRS, said: "There's no doubt that those few bars have helped to make EastEnders a top soap. Music is part of our daily lives, and embedded within British culture.

"We are so lucky that composers and songwriters can create iconic music which we all remember and love."

Are you surprised by these results? Is it right that a TV soap tune should be more recognised than the National Anthem? Is this simply down to the popularity of EastEnders, or is it more a sign of the times that shows people are not very patriotic and take their cultural references from TV instead of historical national customs?

Is God Save the Queen still an appropriate song for our anthem or is there a more relevant song for modern times? Do you recognize the National Anthem when you hear it? Do you know the words to it?
