A BOARD set up to manage waste across the capital has put up £1.5m to fund a 12-month recycling campaign.

The London Waste and Recycling Board is made up of the Mayor of London Boris Johnson and representatives from the capital's borough councils.

It aims to cut the amount of waste being sent to landfill.

People across the capital are being encouraged to recycle more and will be given information to make it easier for them to do so.

Emphasis is also being placed on developing technology to cut carbon emissions, such as anaerobic digestion to capture the potential for renewable energy.

The board aims to reduce dependency on traditional methods of waste disposal including landfill and incineration.

Mr Johnson, who is chairman of the board, said: "I am confident this board is focused on spearheading the fight to drive up recycling and how we manage and dispose of our waste in the capital."
