Hunt for smokers who pushed commuter

10:49am Thursday 7th August 2008

OFFICERS investigating an incident where a commuter was pushed on to train tracks appealed for witnesses at the scene this morning (August 7).

They also checked trains to try and find the men who pushed Linda Buchanan on to the tracks at Farningham Road station yesterday.

The 58-year-old, from Horton Kirby, suffered a fractured wrist and bruising to her legs when she landed.

Other passengers and a member of staff pulled the woman back on to the platform and she was taken to Darent Valley Hospital, Dartford.

The pushing incident happened at 7.07am yesterday as Ms Buchanan walked along the London-bound platform at the station.

British Transport Police (BTP) believes the woman had spoken to the two men about smoking at the station earlier this week.

She was walking past the same men yesterday when one of them pushed her and she fell on to the track.

One of the men is described as being white, in his mid-20s, about 6ft tall and stocky.

He had short cropped brown hair, was wearing beige shorts, a green round-necked t-shirt and trainers.

The second man was a medium built white male in his early 20s.

He was wearing bright red shorts and a dark top.

A BTP spokesman said: "We would urge the people involved to come forward."

Police are appealing to anyone who witnessed the incident to contact BTP on 0800 40 50 40 quoting log 83 of 6/8.

Perhaps the police should start their search in the Erith area?

After all, 99.9 percent of Erith residents are chain-smokers with appalling manners.

I too am getting mightily sick of Erastus. All he does is make negative comments about different places. He has neither the wit nor the intelligence to provide any comments worth reading. I tend to scroll past his drivel and I suggest others do the same. In between his 'comments' you actually find valid points made by reasonable people.

What appalls me about this idiot (and others like him) is that this is a News website for the community.
This news article is a report of a very serious attack, and contains an important request for information which may prevent such attacks being perpetrated in the future.
Comments by people such as erastus (and he's not the only one) trivialise these articles, and put people off from visiting this news site. A lot of people saw the idiotic responses to Simon Bull's charity swap article ... I guess Care in the Community has a lot to answer for ...

In regards to the first post that has diverted any real useful comments/advice to this story... I have read most of his blogs and more often than not found him somewhat intelligent and then he goes and posts such irrelevant comment and quite a pathetic/mindless one at that. So, I would suggest to him using his energy in what he SOMETIMES gets right and leave news as sensitive and as tragic as this one to people who CARE.

Anyway, I suggest that when the CCTV footage is circulated they show the scumbags in every train station they possibly can including central london. If it were a case they we're going to work at the time then surely they will be recognised?

Jeeze whats with you lot with all the happenings of today's England I would have thought a bit of light hearted humor would be welcomed by everyone, just cause everyone else wants to take life too seriously don't count for all of us!!

You all constantly slag Our Lord off but do you ever come up with any valid points as to why you don't want to read what he has to say! After all we have to read most the drivel that comes out of your mouths, and as you are usually all too quick to point out "freedom of speech"

Susie - are you sure "a bit of light hearted humor" is entirely appropriate as a comment on a news article which details on a serious attack on an innocent lady?
Or is your tongue so far up erastus that you have lost your sense of good taste altogether?
Good point raised by a few posters - is there any cctv footage of the attackers, and if so why hasn't it been posted?

You beat me to it Jim.

Hate to break it to you darling but you are in the minority. I am all for light hearted humour but not when what actually happened to this woman was as far as I am concerned attempted murder.

Now as regards these two cowardly 'men' was that fag worth it. Shame on you you vile lowlife cretins.

I dont condone pushing anyone on train tracks, but anti smokers can be very annoying.

If you're smoking in an open area then you're not hurting anyone. If it's illegal then the law is wrong and should be disregarded.

I think that this time you have gone too far. As someone born in Erith and still having family there I find your comments both objectionable and irresponsible.
I call on Richard Firth the Editor to remove your post and hopefully you.
No doubt your response will be derogatory about my family and where I live now but then that is your mentality.
You and your ilk do nothing to improve this newspaper and in fact you are dragging it down into the gutter.

I don't think there will be a problem, tracking down the two scum.
The platform would have had plenty of other passangers at the time.Plus there should be CCTV footage,( if not, this needs to be answered).

Has any of the articles in regards to this story stated that the victim was a non-smoker? For all we know she could be a smoker herself and was simply annoyed that other people can get away with breaking the law when she abides by it.
I completly agree that not being allowed to smoke on an open platform is unfair, but at the end of the day it is the law.

I hope this lady has a speedy recovery and the vile idiots that did this are caught and charged.

The irony of that comment is priceless, considering the insulting nature of yours and other people's response to Erastus's original comment, which was obviously just a throwaway remark about a town. Why can't people see the hypocrisy of it all? When someone posts something that you personally consider to be rude or offensive and you post something back which is twice as rude and offensive, that makes you as bad if not worse than the first person.

Yes it is the law, but it's wrong and more importantly in the case of smoking in the open, it's a victimless crime.

Therefore the law can go and do one - I certainly wont obey it and I'll treat anyone trying to enforce it with disdain and contempt.

NO VICTIM - NO CRIME.

Be assured that I would not react in that way. Why would I? Just because someone insults my town? Why would I care if someone insults what is basically just a collection of paving stones, grass and buildings? I would bite my tongue (or hold my fingers in the case of the internet) and choose not to react, taking the moral high ground. Nor would I take offence at any insults by association. Just because someone insults the people who live in my town doesn't mean they are insulting me personally. People need to grow up and not be so ultra sensitive to the slightest remark and noty be so easily baited by the tamest of provocations.

Sorry to disappoint you I've never put a foot over the doorstep of the Lully so that's another of your generalisations that is wrong.
Neither do I claim on the dole so there's another. I can only assume that you judge others by your own standards hence your dismal views.
