An injured swan has been released back into the wild, after being found with a fishing hook piercing his tongue in Sidcup.

The bird was discovered outside Porsche Centre South London on December 18, unable to fly and looking injured.

Staff at the car showroom immediately alerted the RSPCA.

RSPCA Animal Rescue Officer Brian Milligan collected the swan, taking him to RSPCA Mallydams Wood for treatment.

Mr Milligan said: "The swan had crash-landed by a car dealership and was unable to escape.

"When I arrived, I noticed he had a hook in his tongue which fell out when touched.

"I took him to Mallydams for treatment."

The swan received antibiotics and pain relief to help heal the wound in his tongue.

Despite initial difficulties in eating due to stress and injury, the swan began to self-feed after several days.

Mr Milligan said: "He responded well to the antibiotics and the wound healed nicely.

β€œHe was successfully released back into the wild in nearby Danson park on 2 January.”

The RSPCA has reminded the public that if they spot distressed or neglected animals, they should get in contact.

The animal welfare charity has seen animal neglect and abandonment reach a three-year high due to the pandemic and the rising cost of living.

The RSPCA is calling for supporters to join their winter rescue efforts.
