A beloved Japanese fusion restaurant has closed its doors after its lease was reportedly not renewed.

Zaibatsu’s team thanked patrons for their support and assured customers that they are seeking new premises and will announce updates on their website.

The Trafalgar Road eatery's final day was January 7.

Zaibatsu alleges that its landlord chose not to renew the current lease which has led to the imminent closure.

When News Shopper asked Lewisham comedian John Robins about his favourite places in south east London he replied: “There is an astonishing Japanese place in Greenwich. From the outside it looks like it is really not good but then you go in and it is wonderful.

“It’s called Zaibatsu. It’s absolutely wonderful.”

The venue served Japanese classics such as sushi, sashimi, tempura, noodles and salads.

A google review reads: “An actual hidden gem, Zaibatsu will shock you before you enter. Looks pretty dingy but go in, it's so worth it.

“It has an incredible selection, it is very clean (don't let the run-down image fool you, I've checked with the Food Standards Agency) and the food looks and tastes amazing!

“We had the Tataki, noodles, a sushi set, miso, and some other bits too. Prices are super low so we really went all-out (it was our cheat meal). Keen to try them all.

“Spectacular. I cannot recommend it enough. It gives this genuine feel of being in a regular, honest local eatery in a small place in Japan.

“Portions are huge so definitely check what you order and quality is excellent. We will be back!!”

A statement on the Zaibatsu website reads: "Due to our landlord choosing not to renew our current lease, we are sorry to announce that Zaibatsu will be serving you for the last time at these premises on Sunday 7th January.

"We wish to thank our customers for their patronage over the years and look forward to serving you again when suitable new premises can be found.

"Please look out for further announcements our website www.zaibatsufusion.co.uk"

We have contacted Zaibatsu in an attempt to reach the landlord for comment.
