Cars have been stranded in floodwater after heavy rain caused severe flooding last night in Abbey Wood.

Firefighters were called at 6.15pm yesterday (Tuesday), to the scene of a flooding at the roundabout where Yarnton Way, Harrow Manorway and Eynsham Drive meet.

There were no motorists stuck inside stranded vehicles and they were able to leave their vehicles before the arrival of firefighters.

Firefighters have worked alongside Thames Water to reduce the level of floodwater.

Thames Water say they are aware of the flooding and are working to alleviate the issue.

They are doing this by creating more space in the network and are using tankers.

Road closures remain in place and motorists are advised to continue avoiding the area.

The incident was left in the care of Thames Water at 9.31pm.

Two fire engines from Bexley and Erith fire stations and two fire and rescue units from Bexley and Lewisham fire stations attended the scene.

Firefighters have also been at the scene of flooding on Nathan Way in Plumstead where a road closure was in place.

Sewer flooding causes can include blockages, heavy rainfall, or system failure.

It usually affects outside areas, like gardens and roads.

Heavy rain can sometimes cause surface-water flooding.

Normally excess rainwater is diverted into roadside gullies, which feed into sewers.

If the gullies or sewers become blocked, water can back-up and flood a road.

A spokesperson for London Fire Brigade said: “Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters have been at the scene of flooding in Abbey Wood.

“The area affected includes the roundabout where Yarnton Way, Harrow Manorway and Eynsham Drive meet.

“A 50 metre cordon remains in place at the roundabout.

“A number of vehicles were stranded in floodwater.

“There were no motorists stuck inside stranded vehicles and they were able to leave their vehicles before the arrival of the Brigade.

“Firefighters have worked alongside multi-agency service partners to reduce the level of floodwater. Efforts are ongoing by partners to clear standing water from the area.

“Road closures remain in place and motorists are advised to continue avoiding the area.
