As we enter that time of year where the rumble of summer is replaced with Christmas cheer and the joyful, festive spirit fills the atmosphere, many start to anticipate the countdown to the magical holiday. The community of Canterbury gathered during November to witness the spectacular Lights display as they welcomed the annual Christmas Lights Parade, commemorating Christmas in Canterbury and the start of the Christmas Market!

On Friday 10th November, the historic streets of Canterbury were truly transformed; adorning the streets, the magical lights lit up the heart of Canterbury, firing up the festive souls. The air was filled with a magical ambiance as many stood, anticipating the start of the Aladdin-themed Christmas parade. Many families gathered and the excitement of the children echoed amongst the seasonal songs that played in the background, uplifting the Christmas atmosphere.

The Samba ensemble's rhythmic beats reverberated through the streets, enthralling all as Aladdin and his crew marched the Parade through the cobbled streets of Canterbury to Dane John Gardens, tailed by the huge festive inflatables and schoolchildren in their festive attire as they made their way. Whilst the parade continued, the lights followed the excitement, lighting up one by one, casting a warm, enchanting glow unto the town – the crowds of people cheered as the lights embellished the captivating display. Wouldn’t you want to witness such a magical experience?

Students from a local school who came to the celebration with their friends shared that “the whole experience was beautiful”, “it brought the magic of Christmas to Canterbury City Centre” and that “it brought people together”.

The crowd gathered at Dane John Gardens and watched as the Samba group continued their rhythmic beats as the inflatable Aladdin characters entered before the introduction of Lord Mayor Jean Butcher, who expressed that “Christmas has arrived in Canterbury, oh yes it has” and that “it has been marvellous”. The community did not fail to thank Canterbury BID who organised the event as well as the sponsors, Miles and Bar and the cast of the Aladdin pantomime from the Marlowe Theatre!

The festive evening soon came to an end as Dame Dolly led everyone into the countdown for the Christmas Wish before pressing the button, sending sparks flying. As ‘I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday’ played, the snow machines were set off, and snow fell onto the joyful crowd as they sang along. The atmosphere was truly festive and elated!

The Canterbury Christmas Lights celebration also commemorated the return of the Christmas market with huts spread across town, enticing visitors with churros, delicious donuts, tasty food, warm drinks and many more!

So, if you ever find yourself in Canterbury during the holiday season, don’t miss the opportunity to experience the wonderful Christmas Lights display - “it’s the law” as Dame Dolly would say. Whether you’re strolling through the alluring medieval streets, in need of a last-minute present from the Christmas Market, or solely basking in the warm glow of the Christmas Lights, Canterbury offers a magical experience that truly sets the tone for the jolliest season of the year!
