TRIBUTES have been paid following the death of a Greenwich councillor.
Councillor Kanta Patel, who was born in 1947, represented Plumstead ward and served on the council for more than 21 years.
During that time she also represented the old Herbert and St Alfege wards, served on numerous committees and had a weekly column in the Asian Voice newspaper.
She passed away on Wednesday (July 9).
Council leader Councillor Chris Roberts said: "Kanta was a much liked and well respected member of the council.
"She cared passionately about social justice and was a real champion of the benefits that our diverse borough could bring all local residents, having moved to Greenwich from Tanzania herself in August 1968.
"As well as her work on the council, she will also be remembered by many for her tireless work to improve the living standards of local residents.
"We will all miss her contribution to the local community and will join others in passing on our condolences to her family and friends."
Eltham MP Clive Efford said: "Kanta did so much to bring communities together in our borough.
"There are people today that are benefiting from things that she achieved who will never be aware of the influence Kanta has had on their lives, such was the extent of her achievements.
"I will miss her and my thoughts at this time are with her family."
Ms Patel leaves behind eight brothers and sisters.
