London will be hit with thunderstorms today as Storm Babet is set to continue to batter the UK.

Storm Babet, a complex area of low pressure which developed to the west of the Iberian Peninsula, was named by the Met Office on Monday morning.

The second named storm of the season will last until Saturday and is expected to cause flooding, power cuts and travel disruption in some parts of the UK such as Scotland, but will still bring heavy rain and high winds across the country.

The Met Office weather report for London says: “After a grey and damp start, it will soon brighten up, with a mixture of sunny spells and showers developing by the afternoon. The showers will be locally heavy and possibly thundery at times.

“Feeling warmer compared to Wednesday. Breezy. Maximum temperature 19 °C.

“Tonight: Further heavy showers likely into evening before gradually easing. Further rain, persistent and heavy at times, likey to arrive from the south overnight.

“A strong easterly wind developing. Minimum temperature 12 °C.

“Friday: A wet and windy start on Friday. Rain clearing northwards, with brighter skies and scattered showers developing in the afternoon, locally heavy and possibly thundery.

“Winds easing. Maximum temperature 16 °C.”

A red Met Office warning says from 6pm there is “danger to life from fast-flowing or deep floodwater” in Aberdeenshire and Angus in eastern Scotland, with extensive road closures expected.

There may be power outages and some areas could be cut off for days, with people urged to check for flood updates, avoid travel and expect school closures.
