Legionella source needs more investigation

A LEISURE centre is still not safe for use three weeks after traces of bacteria which can cause Legionnaires' disease were found in the water supply.

Legionella Pneumophilia was found during a routine test at the Ladywell Leisure Centre on May 29.

It was closed as a precaution and the water system was thoroughly disinfected but a low level of the bacteria remains.

Assessments by an independent specialist show that the cause could be related to the building's age and the structure of the plumbing.

The centre, in Lewisham High Street, Lewisham, will remain closed while more tests are carried out.

A Lewisham Council spokesman said: "Although we know this is inconvenient - and we greatly regret the centre has been closed - we hope everyone will understand this work is vital.

"The safeguards we have in place mean the risk to the public is minimal but the centre must remain closed until the council, Lewisham's Primary Care Trust and the Health Protection Agency are all completely satisfied the centre is safe for use.

"Since the centre was due to close in July for unrelated repair work, we will try to ensure this work takes place at the same time."

Dr Rachel Heathcock, Consultant in Communicable Disease Control at South East London Health Protection Unit, said: "We are working closely with Lewisham Council to advise them on appropriate measures to address the problem.

"The risk to the public is likely to be low."

The symptoms of Legionnaires' disease include a 'flu-like' illness with muscle aches, tiredness, headaches, dry cough and fever, leading on to pneumonia.

I'll be surprised if the pool is ever opened again. Circumstances will be made to show Steve Bullock was right all the time in wanting to demolish it.

The centre was closed for 20 months between September 2002 and June 2004 and on top of the 500k spent on removal of asbestos a further £1.4m was spent on general refurbishment.
Why weren't 40 years old showers redone then?
And to put it into perspective, this is not the water system of the pool. These are the showers! It's such a trivial issue.
There's no conspiracy theory here, they're just inept!

close the pool, it is a health hazard and has been for years

The pool can become a health hazard if neglected.
If the Council would pay for refurbishment of the changing rooms it would be second to none.
The pool itself is excellent and swimmers love it because of the good quality of its water and the longer than standard measure.

All the same, it seems quite eerie that the centre Sir Steve Bullock tried to close down, is now closed until further notice due to a water-borne bacteria that "suddenly" appears after all these years. Hmmmmmm

Ditto Jens and Max.
It would seem easier to leave it to fall into disprepair than to sort the problem and have the regular users bringing in some revenue.

Hmmm...it would also seem that 2 buildings in Lewisham, on land that wanted to be sold on, mysteriously got burned down (one was waiting to be listed)...and now the pool is closed for what seems like far too long for a clean? All on the time of Steve Bullocks 'reign of terror'.
Coincidence? I'm not so sure.

why is it that they spend millions of pounds on new leisure centres (altho new and pretty!..) and let perfecty good pools like ladywell fall into disprepair? that money should just go into the maintainence of the facilities we already have! Ladywell is a great lenghth and a decent deep end (i'm guessing the new one will have niether) i love the old pool! keep it open!

no wonder they found bacteria there. me and my friend used to go swimming at ladywell and always felt unwell the day after. the changing room's are nasty and smell of strong urine and fish. so we started going to the bridge even thou it is further to travel for us.
