An Orpington man broke down in tears in court after being caught with indecent images of children as young as three-years-old, telling a judge that paedophiles have to lie to other prisoners about why they are there.

Sean Brady, of Marlborough Close, appeared at the Old Bailey on Tuesday (April 11) where he represented himself while being sentenced for possession of indecent images of children.

In a long speech attempting to save himself from being sent to prison, the 54-year-old explained the impact that previous prison sentences had on his mental health

He told the court he needed therapy after leaving HMP Belmarsh, where he spent his conviction lying to other prisoners about why he was there to avoid being targeted.

Brady, who previously worked for TfL before becoming a gardener, has a long history of offending and has admitted that he has a sexual attraction to young children.

  • In June 2007 he was given a community order for possessing indecent images of children.
  • In April 2008 he was imprisoned for eight months for possessing indecent images of children.
  • In December 2016 he was given a 16-month suspended sentence for possessing indecent images of children and taking upskirt photos of women in public.

In October 2022 police were alerted that Brady had accessed deletion software to try to conceal his actions online.

An officer visited his home and seized a laptop where they found 14 indecent images of children aged from 3 to 12-years-old, Prosecutor Amelia Norman told the court.

Brady gave no comment when interviewed but later he pleaded guilty at Bromley Magistrates Court.

He failed to secure legal representation and did not qualify for legal aid, so asked to represent himself while being sentenced at the Old Bailey.

Brady told the court he had been bullied at school and his dad had been physically abusive to him, which explains the way he has turned out.

He broke in tears as he said: “I did not interact with any of those girls in the videos, nor would I want to, neither now or in the future.”

Through tears Brady added: “I resigned from my job and will probably lose my flat, depending on sentencing.”

Judge Anthony Leonard told Brady: “You have admitted harbouring an attraction to children aged between eight and 15 since 2004.”

He noted that Brady was clearly ashamed of what he has done, but that shame has not stopped him reoffending.

Brady was given a sentence of two years and six months for:

  • Two counts of possessing indecent images of children.
  • Four counts of breaking a sexual harm prevention order by accessing the internet and installing deletion software.
  • One count of breaching a notification requirement (by failing to inform police of a credit card he owned).
