A COUNCIL has ruled out any plans to use lie detectors to catch benefit cheats.

Greenwich Council says it already has an "excellent track record" in dealing with fraudsters.

Last month, the Government announced it was providing funding for 15 more councils to get lie detectors, even though critics fear it might put genuine claimants off applying for help.

Lie detectors have already been used by seven councils.

A Greenwich Council spokesman said: "Guidance from lie detector tests cannot be used in court due to their unreliability and therefore we have no plans to use them."

However, Lewisham Council says it would consider using the technology.
