@the_london_spy In Rye Lane in Peckham, Khan’s store hides an amazing art deco past. If you go inside and look up, you’ll see an incredible vaulted ceilings with lighting shining through Glass discs. it’s been lovingly restored in the last two years and is now a wonderful place to visit in Rylane. The shop itself is also for the fantastic good at great prices. Mr Khan has been recognised by Historic England for his work to restore this landmark Art Deco building on Rye Lane. Akbar Khan, owner of Khan’s, worked with a group of local people – including architect and heritage expert Benny O’Looney and Peckham Vision – to painstakingly restore the spectacular vaulted roof in his emporium at 135 Rye Lane, which was once home to the famous Holdron’s department store. The roof had been hidden for years behind a low false ceiling. #thelondonspy #davidharry #ryelane #peckham #artdeco #hiddenarchitecture #buildingrestoration #londonhistory ♬ original sound - David Harry - The London Spy
The creator went on to say that if you walk towards the back of the shop, you will see an "amazing art deco light installation" made up of panes that used to have "flooded lights" coming through from above.
