Bar closed to curb tension after stabbing

THE Sidcup bar where teenage actor Rob Knox was stabbed to death has had its drinks licence suspended for a week to "allow tensions to diminish."

Bexley police made an interim application for the temporary closure of the Metro Bar in Station Road, Sidcup, at a hastily convened emergency meeting of Bexley Council's licensing sub-committee at the civic offices in Bexleyheath Broadway last night.

When it reopens next Tuesday (June 2) the bar will have to abide by new licensing conditions.

These include the use of hand-held metal detectors on customers entering the bar, to check for weapons such as knives.

Mr Knox, aged 18, of Maidstone Road, Sidcup, was killed and five others were injured in the incident outside the bar.

In the interim application, presented by Bexley police's licensing officer PC Eddy Boston, police stated: "Police would suggest that alcohol, mixed with a young clientele, some of whom are underage, might have been a cause of this terrible tragedy."

The application continued: "As a result of the murder and woundings, tension is high throughout Sidcup.

"Police are of the opinion that if the premises were open to the public, it may be a flashpoint for further incidents of serious crime and disorder."

Other conditions imposed by the licensing sub-committee include the requirement for customers who look under the age of 25 to produce ID and a ban on the sale of alcohol if the bar's upgraded CCTV system is not in operation.

A full review of the licence will take place on June 20.

Karl Bishop, aged 21, of Beaver Lodge, Carlton Road, Sidcup, appeared before Bexley Magistrates Court yesterday, charged with the murder of Mr Knox and five charges of wounding with intent.

Just because under 25s are asked for ID, doesn't mean that the ID provided will be legitimate.
You would be surprised at the extent of underage drinking in commercial premises, catered for by the wide availability of fake ID

It should at least lost its 1am licence - I can't believe out of all the bars in Sidcup, this trouble-ridden dive is the only one with its opening hours extended beyond midnight. Ridiculous. I'd love to see the place closed for good, but unfortunately they'll only go elsewhere - probably to the few places I like socialising in the area.

This pub needs to be closed for good, my x-partner was bottled in this pub about 8 years ago when it was called the Iron Horse, the pub has always had a bad name for trouble, how can you give a pub back a license that has always had trouble around it!!! Wake up! how many more lives need to be taken before something is done!

Debbie, closing the pub won't do anything. The idiots will just find somewhere else to cause trouble. The British Justice system is a shambles, so the Government needs to address that, to put these idiots off causing trouble. They just get a slap on the wrist and thats it. Also, the parents need to be educated on how to teach their kids respect for others.

If you went round closing every pub where there's been trouble, there'd be nowhere left for civilised people to drink.

BUT u cant go blamin the BOUNCERS as their job isnt to look after the punters, they are not babysitters! it is a tragic yet again another kid is killed but even if a bouncer had got involved just like the other boys he would have been stabbed... too many ppl are scared these days to jump in and help ppl out. do u blame them?! i hope justice comes to rob n robs parents. i would just like to see something being done about it! before we lose anymore Ppl over Knifes and Guns!

the 1am licence should be removed.

if it was known that customers were under age why were they let in why were they served?

why dont all pubs/clubs have hand held metal detectors?

if the bouncers were told there was going to be trouble why did the bar remain open why were the police not called sooner?

was there a problem with the cctv if its being upgraded??

Thugs that go around stabbing are most of the time off their head on drugs aswell but drugs are something that has got completely out of control - something has to be done, we can't go on living like this and it's all happening so close to home

Lord Erastus Theobald Piggott please be quiet. The young people that frequent The Metro Bar are mainly students and there is hardly any trouble there now and hasn't been for a few years. The trouble was caused by young people who usually do not use the pub and were not regulars. I feel sorry for you if in the past you had a problem in the pub but that was in the past. If you want to check the area for problem premises check the high street. And by the way who made you a Lord. I believe that to be a title bestowed upon someone not given to themselves.

Oh dear, obviously the Police did bugger all before this terrible murder although they were clearly aware and had concerns.

I would suggest that Police could have easily implemented a few measures before this poor boy was murdered to prevent this crime.

Sounds a bit like closing the stable door after the horse has bolted. No change there with either Bexley Council or the inept fools who Police that area.

Now I wonder whether this tragedy could have been avoided if someone had simply bothered to pull their finger out before another young life was snubbed out?

i think that if the metro closes the trouble will just move on to all the other pubs and bars in and around sidcup. if they closed every pub where there was violence and crimes where would everyopne drink and socialise?

in the reports Karl wasnt actually drinking in the pub and the murder happened outside. it really is a tragic loss of life and i feel the greatest sympathy for Robs family and friends.

I definately think that something needs to be done about the bouncers though. people should be searched EVERYTIME they enter the bar regardless of if they had been drinking in there and then left and returned. the times i have been to the metro gone in, had a drink, popped across the road to the shop and returned and been let straight back in without being searched. theres alot of people who do that who knows what else they are bringin in to the pub.

You can normally have quite a good nite in the metro, most of the rows and fights happen after closing time and near the station and bus stops, would u like to bulldoze them too?

With out wishing to sound harsh Paul is correct, obviously there are people going to the site to grieve but there is also an element of youngsters going there because of the attention the area is receiving. This element is the same element that used to terrorise people waiting for the buses outside the Tesco by the stations and not true friends of relatives of the deceased.

Let them grieve in their own way. For some of these youngsters it maybe the first experience of a death of a close friend and so tragically at that. The flowers and balloons, etc are doing no harm, they just show what a remarkable person Rob was and that he was much loved by all his friends.

This pub has always been well known for underage drinkers.I have been there on a Friday night,it is more like a kids youth club,if it gets its licence back then it needs to be monitored very closely,why are all pubs not given these knife detectors, at the end of the day its the magistrates who need to get real, that is prosecute everyone carrying knives, give the police back their powers,stop parents shirking their responsibilities, it begins at home,no respect,kids have been too spoilt,they do not rule the streets the police do, and they all need to learn respect,who cares if kids get upset because police are turning out their pockets, it may keep your child safe !heart goes out to robs family,

Why shouldn't the pub management take some of the responsibility for what happened? They employ bouncers for a reason. So if this thing charged with murder had been checked on the way in to the pub the knives may have been found?
Also why are there underage people in there? Surely the management should take the responsibility for that.
There are so many pubs/clubs in Bromley and surrounding areas that allow underage drinkers in I find it amazing that it's allowed to go on.

The vast marjority of people probably are paying their respects but you may well get a few people hanging around.

If contributers making comments knew this pub was a well known trouble spot for at least 8 years I assume they made their concerns known to the appropriate authorities?

The same with the alleged underage drinkers, did contributers who witnessed it draw it to the attention of the owners?

Did any of those who feel it should have been closed down ever register their opposition to any licence renewals or extensions over the years?

Well paul if you are a sidcup resident you are an heartless one. These teenagers are coming to terms with the death of a friend or acquaintance or just someone they recognised on the street - some cant belive it has happened - so sorry if a few balloons and flowers and hanging around annoys you well tough because in your area there have been 2 stabbings
so s** your upper class attitude and lets hope the kid are there for a few weeks yet .
I went there with my daughter and they are just talking about rob and trying to cope

I think the kids hanging around outside Somerfield really dont know what to do next, they are very young to have lost a friend, I don't think they thought for one minute that a friend of theirs would die at such an early age and don't forget he was murdered, and for some of them it's probably the first time they have lost somebody close. We all grieve in different ways.

I agree. I wanted to go into Somerfield last night after getting off the train, and found it very intimidating. If Tesco's had been open, i would have gone there instead. There's 1.. yes only 1 community police officer standing there, yet there were at least 20 youths there. What good is 1 officer going to be if anything kicks off. It doesn't help that it is half term and they have no where to go. I agree with earlier comments. They've had their time to grieve. Time to let things get back to normal.

yes but door staff and pub managers are wise to tis and now days most door staff if they suspect the id will check it for the uv markings which is an excellent way of telling fakes so i dont think this would be the case

Let the young people have this site to take the time they need to grieve, after everything that has happened I am sure the last thing on their minds is to cause trouble. I am sure as time passes, life can get back to some normality, but for the time being let the family and friends do their grieving in their own way.

It makes me laugh that people are shouting "shut the dive down"...do you even know the real story?? or are you taking what the news of the screws is reporting??most probably the latter. perhaps if you knew the real story you would realise that the bar did everything in its power to prevent this happening...is it their fault that the police failed to act on information that was passed to them before this tragic event...and lord whatever you name, what a complete joke, you need to get yourself out more and realise that 99% of ppl in the metro are there to have a good time and enjoy a good relationship with the management and/or staff, as usual its the minority ruining it for the majority...in fact the scum who committed this crime wasn't even in the bar!!
The police blaming the bar is just there way of hiding their errors in the handling of the situation. And for those wondering why the police weren't called earlier they were..is it the bars fault they did nothing about it???
as for the underage drinkers, i know the bar is very strict on this with a policy of anyone looking under 21 to be ID'd and when possible try to police outside the bar to ensure that people are not buying alcohol for underage people..however again when asking the police for assistance in moving underage people or troublemakers on they get no help.
so before you come out with your pitchforks and torches looking for a scapegoat and blaming the Metro bar, perhaps you should consider that nobody is to blame apart from the scum/cowards that carry knives.

Having been in the metro on a reguar basis i can honestly say that the bouncers and bar staff do id anyone who looks 'young'. what is the point of closing one pub their is trouble everywhere not just in the metro have you driven through bexleyheath or bromley at kicking out time????

trouble will happen anywhere i think that is obvious from what has been happening in todays society. clearly people are trying to blame someone or something. try the murdering scum who carry knives and go out with the intent to kill.

as for PAUL EVANS are you being serious????? some of the people outside are the ones who were with the people who were murdedred/injured and held the knife man until the police arrived they are lost and dont know what to do or where to go. theses youngsters have images that they can never erase allow them to grieve for their friend without the likes of you making pathetic comments.

The night Rob knox was killed there was rumours that men were coming down with knifes. Rob and his friends told the bouncers and they simply told them "not to worry."

If they had done their job they would have called the police and Rob may still be here today.

Something needs to be done fast, and if they had these detectors for knifes originally that would also have helped!

I'm not going back to that place again.

The doormen had barred this individual a week before and he was not allowed to enter the premises.You may want to ask why the police did not search him when told of him ?I.D checks are stringent at the metro bar but if someone has a brothers passport who is two years older,what do you suggest then ?Please do not believe all you read in the paper.

Some of the comments on here are a disgace, Oh I felt intimiated so couodnt go shopping, blah blah.
If these grief stricken teenagers were doing anything wrong they would be moved on by the police. I am a Sidcup resident and have been for over 30 years - I have teenage granchildren and have past the scene in my car many times. They are not intimadating they look lost and are meeting others there. remember it is half term and this killing is still very raw for them.

I presume it is comments from the snobby sidcup residents who would rather this young man was killed somewhere else so as not to effect the price of
their chalet homes.

Bill I understand what you saying but surely you can't say that spray painting the bridge with grafitti is an act of grief. We complain the kids these days do not know any boundries and here is a prime example.

" Metro Bar a rough pub " I have drank in the Metro Bar since 1996 when it was called the Iron Horse and I can saftley say it has NEVER been "ROUGH".

It is a friendly welcoming pub with regular customers, many of whom are from the local collages and drama schools. This is not a pub for underage drinkers as everyones ID is checked even mine at age 28.

As for the comment on sending the bulldozers in with people inside YOU ARE SICK ! there is a family living above there with a baby !

Instead of blaming the pub maybe you should take a closer look at "BROKEN BRITAIN" The bad policing and leanient laws in the this country is where to lay the blame.

It frightens me to think what Britain will be like when my children grow up !

Rob's friends are thinking of creating a memorial at the place where Rob lost his life which I think its a lovely idea as a mark of remembrance if the local council allow it.

Going by the comments made in the latest article on here it seems some must have had a word with Rob's family and suggested that people had a problem with the tributes being laid outside Sommerfields which is sad and rather selfish I feel.

Anyway I am glad most people of all ages did take their time to have a look and remember Rob.

Sounds like a good kind idea Sam but if people were upset about a few flowers and a few people remember their lost mate what will they do if a plaque is permanently placed at the spot.

STOP scaremongering !!!
The Manager & Staff did not allow anyone in underage we were all searched and I.D at least five times on Friday night there were no underage drinkers Rob was of age and his brother was outside all night with his mates There were no Knife carriers in the Bar Bishop went away to get a Knife He would have killed anywhere that night so a metal detector wouldn't have stopped him as he never got in the bar The Bouncers did their job they stopped him coming in ! Lee and his team do a great job creating a safe place for us to party and have fun so leave the guy and his bar alone!! Out of respect to Rob and everyone involved stop reading & listening to the Media... P.S. Rashers & Pinkey make the most sense !!!

I agree with 'Fan of the Metro Bar' Do any of you actually go in to the metro! I'm in there nearly every weekend for the past year, and there has never been any major problems! You get the odd argument like in any pub but this is quickly stopped by the bouncers!! You cant blame the bouncers, there job description doesnt include lose of life!! They know me in there and i still get asked for my ID everytime! I've had some of the best times with my mates in that place and it would be a great lose to many young people if it was closed down! This guy wanted to hurt them people, so it wouldnt have matter what pub it happened at, it would have happened, so the metro and it's staff cant be blamed for this horrible death! The only people that actually know what happened that night was the people that were there and that memory will stay with them for the rest of there lives! RIP Rob and get better soon Dean!

I came past somerfields last night and the flowers that someone had left outside the met bar were thrown over the pavement, there was only one small pot but whoever you are what do you think you have achieved??
