BAGS of clothes were set alight in lift in a block of flats in Sydenham.

The fire in the lift in Worsely House, Shackleton Close started when the lift car was filled bags of clothes which were then deliberately set alight.

The lift car - which was on the first floor at the time - was badly damaged.

And so was motor of the lift shaft.

The lobbies on all five floors of the block of flats were damaged by smoke.

No one was injured in the incident - which happened at 3.27am on April 21.

But a spokesman for the fire brigade said it could have been very serious.

He said :"There was potential for it being very serious.

"Youths were heard around the time it happened making noise in the building.

"Whether or not it was started as a small prank - it has caused serious damage and will cost thousands of pounds to repair."

Police are investigating the incident.
