Roads closed for marathon


THOUSANDS of runners taking part in the London Marathon have set off from Greenwich and Blackheath.

The professional athletes started the race in Shooters Hill Road in Blackheath from 9am today.

The majority of runners taking part left from Greenwich Park.

An estimated 35,000 runners have set off on the 26-mile course from south east London to Buckingham Palace.

The conditions are ideal for running a marathon - fine and warm, with showers forecast for later in the day.

A number of roads in the borough of Greenwich have been closed because of the race.

  • The Village (Charlton)
  • Charlton Park Road
  • Little Heath
  • Hillreach
  • Artillery Place
  • Wellington Street
  • Woolwich Church Street
  • Woolwich Road
  • Trafalgar Road
  • Nelson Road
  • College Approach
  • Romney Road
  • King William Walk
  • Greenwich Church Street
  • Creek Road
  • A2/A102 on and off slip roads to Sun in the Sands
  • Greenwich South Street
  • Greenwich High Road
  • Greenwich Foot Tunnel - southbound - will be closed between 10am and 12 noon.

It is estimated that the roads will re-open at 2pm.
