10:37am Sunday 13th April 2008

THOUSANDS of runners taking part in the London Marathon have set off from Greenwich and Blackheath.

The professional athletes started the race in Shooters Hill Road in Blackheath from 9am today.

The majority of runners taking part left from Greenwich Park.

An estimated 35,000 runners have set off on the 26-mile course from south east London to Buckingham Palace.

The conditions are ideal for running a marathon - fine and warm, with showers forecast for later in the day.

A number of roads in the borough of Greenwich have been closed because of the race.

It is estimated that the roads will re-open at 2pm.
