A ROCK star has paid tribute to the "guardian angel" who rescued him when he blacked out.

Roger LaVERN, keyboard player with 50s acts The Tornados and Billy Fury, was walking towards his home in Mays Hill Road, Shortlands, along a raised pavement in Glassmill Lane when he felt faint.

As the 70-year-old, who features on Billy Fury's album which hit number 10 in the charts last week, fell towards the barrier above the road, a stranger appeared and propped him up.

He then helped Mr LaVERN for the remaining mile, carrying his umbrella and briefcase.

When he got home and turned to thank his saviour, the man had disappeared.

Mr LaVERN, whose real surname is Jackson, is now hoping to find out who the man is so he can thank him.

He said: "I have led a crazy life but after this I have started trying to be a better boy.

"My ex-wife said it was my guardian angel."
