DOG owners can have their pets microchipped for free in a bid to cut the number of animals who go missing.

Microchipping is a permanent ID that helps reunite owners with their four-legged friends if they are lost or stolen.

Lewisham Council and the RSPCA London South East Branch are offering the microchipping day for dogs owned by the borough's residents.

It takes place on 27 March from 11am to 3pm at the Animal Welfare office, Wearside Service Centre, Wearside Road, Lewisham.

Owners wishing to bring their dogs along should call 020 8314 2098 for an appointment or more information.

Residents can bring as many dogs as they like but need to make an appointment first and bring proof of ownership and proof they live in the borough.

From April 6 stray dogs should be reported to Lewisham Council from 8.30am to 4.30pm on weekdays by calling 020 8314 2098.

Outside these hours, call Battersea Dogs and Cats Home on 020 7622 3626.
