YOUNGSTERS took part in a sponsored readathon to raise money for charity.

More than 300 pupils from New Ash Green Primary School in Ash Road, Longfield, read as many books as they could from March 3 to March 7.

The children, aged four to 11, were raising money for the children's cancer support charity, CLIC Sargent, as well as the Roald Dahl Foundation which supports a range of UK charities for young people.

Pupils dressed up as their favourite book character on March 7 and took part in book swap shops with their fellow students throughout the week.

Head of literacy, Becky Cecconi, who organised the event, said: "It was a brilliant opportunity for the children to raise money for a very worthy charity and they had fun with their reading at the same time."

The amount of money raised is not yet known but Penguin books have agreed to offer the school the same amount in books at half the price.
